हमारी अधिकांश नदियां या तो दम तोड़ चुकी हैं या सूखने की कगार पर हैं। विडंबना देखिए कि जो थोड़ा-बहुत पानी बचा है, वह भी अब ज़हर बन चुका है। आज अधिकांश बीमारियां पानी के रास्ते हमारे शरीर में घर कर रही हैं। महंगे 'वाटर प्यूरीफायर' भी इस प्रदूषण के आगे घुटने टेक रहे हैं। ऐसे में अगर आप अब भी हाथ पर हाथ धरे किसी 'आसमानी चमत्कार' की उम्मीद लगाए बैठे हैं, तो आपकी समझ पर सिर्फ तरस ही खाया जा सकता है।
अफ़सोस! जल संकट अब सर्वनाश की आहट दे रहा है। बेज़ुबान पशु-पक्षियों की प्रजातियां लुप्त हो रही हैं, हवा और भोजन ज़हरीले हो चुके हैं, और 'बुद्धिमान' मानव अब भी धर्म, राजनीति और ओछी बहसों में उलझा है। यह बिल्कुल वैसा ही है, जैसे बीच समंदर में डूबते जहाज़ का सवार अपनी मौत को सामने देखकर भी अपने कपड़े तह करने में व्यस्त हो। याद रहे, तबाही की बिल्ली आपको घूर रही है; कबूतर की तरह आँखें मूंदने से अब जान नहीं बचेगी। आज यह बात मैं कह रही हूँ, कल यही चीख आपकी खाली बाल्टी और सूखे गिलास से भी निकलेगी।
सबसे ज्यादा दुख इस बात का है कि जो शुद्ध जल राह चलते कुओं, हैंडपंपों और नदियों में हर किसी के लिए मुफ्त उपलब्ध था, आज वह बोतलों में बंद होकर दुकानों में बिक रहा है—और वह भी हमारे भारत जैसे देश में! विडंबना देखिए कि हम खुद को पहले से अधिक 'सम्पन्न' कह रहे हैं।
दो मिनट रुकिए और सोचिए... क्या हम सचमुच सम्पन्न हुए हैं? या पानी जैसी बुनियादी चीज़ को भी खरीदने की विवशता में हम पहले से कहीं अधिक गरीब हो गए हैं?

Stop for two minutes and think... Have we truly become prosperous? Or have we become poorer than ever in our compulsion to buy even a basic necessity like water?
