"सूरज का पीछा करता है क्युँ ये अँधियारा?

उजियारे से क्यूँ जलता है यूँ ये अँधियारा?

पत्तों के ऊपर अटकी है देखो आकर धूप,

पत्तों के नीचे बैठा है कुछ यूँ अँधियारा॥

​किरणों के आँचल के नीचे छुप करके बैठा है,

किरणों की ही संतानों सा है ये अँधियारा॥

​

रोज़ दुपहरी का बदला लेती है आकर रात,

साँझ ढले ही फैल रहा है यूँ ये अँधियारा॥

​

दिन का आँचल थाम रखा है दीपों की पाँतों ने,

दीपक के तल में बैठा है छुपकर अँधियारा॥

​

इतनी नफरत से ना देखो अँधियारे को लोगों!

उजियारे से थकी निगाहें ढूँढें अँधियारा॥

​उजियारा जब संगीनों सा आँखों को चुभता है,

आँखों को अच्छा लगता है तब ये अँधियारा।।"

"Why does this darkness chase the sun?

Why does it burn with jealousy of the light?

​Look, the sunlight lingers atop the leaves,

While beneath them sits the darkness, so quiet.

​Hidden under the veil of the rays it rests,

Like a child born of the light itself, this darkness.

​Every night comes to avenge the scorching noon,

Spreading its wings as soon as the evening falls.

​Rows of lamps have held onto the daylight’s hem,

Yet, at the very base of the lamp, hides the darkness.

​O people, do not look at the dark with such hatred!

For eyes tired of the glare seek the comfort of the dark.

​When the brilliance pierces the eyes like bayonets,

It is then that this darkness feels so kind to the eyes."
