'Suvarana: The Saga' Episode - 4

Previously on Suvarna:

Calming the Queen’s anxieties, Maharaja Sukarmaditya explained that experiencing 'ordinary life' is an essential training for Prince Vikramaditya’s future. The following day, in the Shiva-Udyan, the King placed three identical golden idols before Dhruvdev to test his intellect. Having uncovered the secret of these statues with his keen observation, Dhruvdev is now set to prove his findings using simple blades of grass.

<◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆>

Dhruvdev approached the marble platform with steady steps and picked up the first idol. He took a blade of grass and began to insert it into the tiny hole in the idol's ear with great precision. At that moment, the Queen and the Prince seemed to hold their breath, watching Dhruvdev’s hands intently; meanwhile, a mysterious smile played on Maharaja Sukarmaditya’s lips, as if he was already familiar with Dhruvdev’s next move.

As soon as Dhruvdev inserted the blade of grass into the ear of the first idol, it came out through its mouth in an instant. A meaningful silence filled the air. Placing the idol back on the platform, Dhruvdev said in a calm voice, "Your Majesty! Although this idol may be superior from an artistic point of view, it is of very low value on the scale of life values."

Maharaja Sukarmaditya furrowed his brows and asked curiously, "Indeed, Dhruv! How so? How did you judge its value to be so low just because a blade of grass came out of its mouth?"

With immense confidence in his voice, Dhruvdev said, "O King! This idol is an exact symbol of those individuals in society with whom no information remains safe. Whatever they hear, they immediately spit out without thinking, without understanding its essence. In common parlance, they are also called 'talkative' or 'gossips.' Breaking confidentiality and spreading things here and there becomes their basic nature. For this reason, they often have to face rejection and insult in society, but the stubbornness of their character is such that they are not affected by any shame. Such people prove to be the biggest traitors in times of crisis. Therefore, this idol, symbolizing such a hollow character, certainly deserves the lowest value."

Expressions of deep agreement and satisfaction appeared on the faces of the King, the Queen, and the Prince. Dhruvdev now picked up the second idol and repeated the same process. This time, when he inserted the blade of grass into the ear, it did not come out of the mouth, but out of the idol's other ear.

Looking at the Maharaja, Dhruvdev spoke in a logical tone, "Your Majesty! This second idol is of slightly higher value than the first. You saw that this time the blade of grass went in through one ear and came out through the other. That is, it represents those people who listen to the world's talk but do not give it a place within themselves. They neither reflect on what they hear nor do they derive any essence from it. Society often neglects them, considering them 'careless.' Although they do not harm anyone directly, they do not learn anything new either; therefore, they often remain deprived of life's great achievements. Since they are not directly harmful to society, I have considered their value to be of the medium category."

Saying this, Dhruvdev stopped and waited for the Maharaja's next reaction.

A faint smile appeared on the Maharaja’s face, and he said, "Wonderful, Dhruv! Your explanation is excellent and subtle. I completely agree with your logic. Now... now reveal the secret of that third idol."

Dhruvdev’s steps now moved toward the final idol. He picked up a fresh blade of grass and inserted it into the hole of the idol's ear with extreme care. But what was this! This time the blade did not come out from anywhere. Dhruvdev inserted two or three more blades one after the other, but they all vanished somewhere inside the idol.

Dhruvdev cast a deep and respectful look at the Maharaja and said, "O King! This third idol is truly precious and rare. You saw that the blades of grass that went inside did not come out, because this idol is a symbol of those human beings who are masters of deep, serious, and high character. Such great souls listen to everything in the world, absorb its essence in their inner mind, but never misuse anyone's confidentiality. They accumulate knowledge within themselves and speak meaningful words only at the appropriate time. Such individuals are the pillars of society, in whom everyone can trust fearlessly. They are true well-wishers and reliable friends to all. Such serious personalities are rarely found in the world, and what is rare is precious. Finding the company of such a person is no less than a blessing. Therefore, in my opinion, this idol is the most valuable."

As soon as Dhruvdev’s words fell silent, the King, the Queen, and the Prince looked at each other in amazement. Suddenly, the enthusiasm within Prince Vikramaditya broke all bounds. He stood up from his seat and said in a delighted voice while clapping, "Matchless friend! Wow! You have woven such deep truths of life into lifeless metals. Your explanation is unforgettable."

Maharaja Sukarmaditya’s eyes gleamed with pride as he spoke— "Well said, my son! Dhruvdev, your evaluation is not just precise, but it stands perfectly true on the touchstone of reality. You have proved that your vision does not merely look at the surface, but sees the very core."

The Queen’s heart overflowed with maternal affection. Rising with grace, she approached Dhruvdev and gently stroked his head with great fondness, saying— "I fully support the Maharaja’s words, son! The subtle analysis you have provided of human nature is proof of your mature intellect. Here, a small blessing from my side for you..."

Saying this, the Queen personally fastened a jewel-encrusted golden armband (Bajuband) onto Dhruvdev’s arm. Her eyes held the same motherly love she felt for the Prince. Dhruvdev touched the feet of the King and Queen with utmost humility, as if he wished to cherish their affectionate blessings more than the armband itself. The Queen’s warmth and this honor filled Dhruvdev’s heart with gratitude. A spark of joy shone in his eyes.

After a few moments of this pleasant atmosphere, the royal gravity returned to Maharaja Sukarmaditya’s face. Changing the subject, he began to provide Dhruvdev with the finer details of the secret mission. The Maharaja explained at length how they would have to renounce their royal identities and live like ordinary citizens in the distant provinces of the kingdom. The Maharaja officially appointed Dhruvdev as the chief associate and protector of Prince Vikramaditya.

Upon hearing this, Dhruvdev’s face lit up with resolve. He became ready instantly without any hesitation. In fact, both friends were inwardly thrilled at the mere thought of this unknown journey and exciting lifestyle. For them, it was not just a royal task, but a golden opportunity to know their land more closely. For a while, the King, Queen, Prince Vikramaditya, and Dhruvdev continued to walk in the garden, talking and enjoying the pleasant surroundings. Maharaja Sukarmaditya gave them both the necessary guidelines.

Then the Maharaja spoke to Dhruvdev with fatherly affection— "Dhruv! Although I have already informed your father of this plan and he has gladly given his consent, my heart still says that you should go home once and meet your parents yourself. The moment of departure is always significant for a family."

Dhruvdev replied with joined hands and great humility— "Your Majesty! Your command is paramount for me and my family. The truth is that more than my biological parents, both of you have given me affection, raised me, and borne the responsibility of my education. My father has always said that serving the Maharaja is my first duty and I never need separate permission for it. Still, as a son’s duty, I will certainly go to inform them of this journey and seek their blessings. If you permit, may I return tomorrow morning and then begin this journey from here with my dear friend, the Prince?"

Seeing his loyalty, the Maharaja nodded with satisfaction and said— "Certainly, son! Go now and spend some time with your parents and return tomorrow, because the time of your return is uncertain. But remember, the secrecy of this journey is its greatest strength. Until you cross the borders of Suryapur, let no one get an inkling of where the Prince is and in what guise."

"As you command, Your Majesty! I will take full care of this," Dhruvdev said firmly.

Dhruvdev embraced Prince Vikramaditya. There was a spark in both their eyes reflecting unbroken trust in each other and readiness for the challenges ahead. Offering a respectful salutation to the King and Queen, Dhruvdev departed for his home.

After Dhruvdev’s departure, the Prince sat in the garden with his parents for some time. Following some special conversation and the affectionate company of his parents, he finally moved toward his private chamber with a heavy heart yet new energy, where he had to prepare for the long journey tomorrow.
