'Suvarana: The Saga' Episode - 14

The Echoes of a Past Life🥀

Previously: You read about Princess Swarnaprabha, affectionately called 'Suvarna' by all. The joy of her seventeenth birthday celebrations was overshadowed by a small accident. The fire in the fading night awakened dormant sensations of a previous birth within Suvarna. Now, moving forward...

(If you haven't started reading 'Suvarna' yet and are not acquainted with the story's hero, here is the link to the first part of "Suvarna the Saga":

After a while, the Queen Mother also gave the Princess instructions to sleep and headed towards her own chambers. Finding herself alone, the Princess lay on her bed, cherishing the day's memories. Then, as she turned over, her gaze fell upon that corner of the room where the flames had risen just a short while ago.

Suddenly, she felt a strange sense of dread and sat up. She felt like calling out to someone, but then thought that everyone must be resting after the day's exhaustion. So, she got up herself, drank some water, and lay down again, but she turned her face away from the burnt curtain. For a while, she recalled the morning's scenes at the temple and remembered Lord Mahadev, which brought some peace to her mind.

Exhaustion took over, and she soon fell into a deep slumber.
In her sleep, she found herself in a dense and terrifying forest. Thick darkness surrounded her. Then, she heard a heart-wrenching scream— "No! Don't do this!" followed by the sound of someone wailing. Terrified, she began looking around, but saw nothing; she couldn't even tell which direction the voice was coming from. She tried to call out— "Listen! Is someone there? Do you need help?" But no sound escaped her lips, as if the words were choked in her throat.

Then the voice came again— "No! I will not live without you... I too will leap into this fire and give up my life... Ah! We shall meet again... we surely will!" Then a scream echoed, and suddenly, with a 'whoosh,' flames of fire erupted all around. The Princess wanted to scream in that circle of fire, but it felt as if her throat was blocked. Suddenly, her eyes snapped open. She was drenched in sweat, her breathing was rapid, and her heart was pounding hard. She looked around frantically.

"What is this? I am in my own room... so was that a dream? Ah! What a painful dream! Those words... that scream... they all felt familiar despite being unknown, as if they were echoing within me. Was that me? And who was he, for whom she... or perhaps I, gave up my life? What is this mystery?"

The Princess kept tossing and turning for a long time and eventually, exhaustion sent her back into the lap of sleep. And before her closed eyes, the motion picture of memories began to play again... she saw herself in the form of a sparrow sitting on a tree. It was as if an ancient book of images had opened... two chirping birds and their hatchlings... then the arrival of a traveler and 'Gaura' suddenly jumping into the blazing fire!

The Princess's eyes opened again. The scent of sandalwood in the room, mingled with the smell of the burnt curtain, was making the thin veil of her memories even more transparent. This time, she remembered everything—how in her previous birth she was a sparrow living a happy life with her husband, the male sparrow (Gaura). Then, on a terrible winter night, a traveler came into their lives, and in their hospitality, both of them sacrificed their lives. For a long time, the Princess felt like that same sparrow and shed tears.

Then suddenly, she realized reality and began to converse with herself, "What is this? I am a human... and I am weeping for someone I don't even know in this birth! Could he too be born somewhere, just like me?" (The Princess got out of bed and began pacing the room in anxiety).

"His nature in our past life is still etched in my memories—always ready for selfless service and that unparalleled love for me! But for his duty, that cruel man abandoned me in a moment... no, he didn't abandon me, but he considered duty greater than love. And I? I too fulfilled my duty for the sake of love. But will he be the same in this birth too? Brave, kind, dutiful and... and loving me?" (For a moment, the Princess blushed at her own thoughts). "Surely he will be like that; after all, I am the same too. But how do I find him? I fully remember the affection of my past life; now it is impossible for me to marry anyone else. I will marry only him, or else I will remain unmarried.

Should I tell Mother everything? She can help me by talking to Father... no, I would feel ashamed. And how would they even search? It's a matter of a past life; if an attempt is made to find him, many fake 'Gauras' will show up for marriage." (The Princess smiled at her own imagination, then became serious again).

"Whatever happens," (closing her eyes and folding her hands in the void), "O Lord of Lords, Mahadev! May I see only my husband with these eyes. May my hand be held only by that Lord of my previous birth. Whatever worship I have offered you till today, give me this one fruit, O Lord! Make my service successful, Shiv Shambhu...!"

Just then, some inspiration struck her mind; she got up, took out a silk cloth from the wardrobe, and tied a blindfold over her eyes. As soon as she tied the cloth, she felt an inexplicable mental peace and consolation. She went back to bed and slept. After that, no nightmare came, and she woke up safely in the morning.
