Upon waking up in the morning, even routine daily chores seemed extremely difficult for the Princess in this new state, but she was a woman of firm determination. She had made up her mind that she would live this way from now on.
As her friends and maidservants entered the chamber, they were stunned. Everything was fine until last night, so why this sudden blindfold?
Hearing the Princess’s serious and commanding tone, the friends froze.
Chanda’s eyes filled with tears, and she spoke in a cracked voice, "What happened, Sakhi? Are you so upset with our mistake from yesterday that you won't even look at our faces now?"
The Princess quickly reached out, felt for her hand, and held it to reassure her, "Sakhi, that can never happen. But do not even ask me why I have done this... I cannot tell you the reason. I swear by my life to all of you, do not pressure me to reveal this secret or to remove this blindfold!"
The friends were left speechless. The Princess continued, "Now, please assist me with my bath and adornment." Chanda, Madhavi, Pushpa, Kamini, and all the other friends immediately set to work helping her.
Since the Princess could not see, Bhama took advantage of the situation and quietly slipped away. As soon as she left the chamber, she ran like an arrow toward the Queen Mother’s quarters. Not finding her there, she rushed toward the royal kitchen, as the Queen herself used to cook for the King and the Princess and supervised all other arrangements. Bhama was certain she would find her there.
Bhama saw the Queen Mother heading toward the kitchen; meanwhile, hearing the thud of Bhama’s running, the Queen Mother also stopped to look at her. Reaching her, Bhama called out breathlessly, "Queen Mother!"
Queen Ratnagarbha smiled and said, "You silly girl! Why do you keep running like this? When will you improve? Wait... wait, what is this? Why are you crying? Is our Suvarna alright?"
Catching her breath and wiping her eyes, Bhama said, "Queen Mother, please come quickly! Heaven knows what the Princess has thought... she has tied a blindfold over her eyes and won't remove it despite our repeated pleas."
Hearing this, the Queen Mother grew anxious and hurried toward the Princess’s chamber. When she arrived, Phulwa, the maidservant who was cleaning, informed her that the Princess and her friends had already gone to the bathing area. The Queen’s gaze fell upon the corner of the room that had been scorched the previous night. She said to Phulwa, "Phulwa, have this burnt corner of the room cleaned immediately. It was late last night, and I left it so as not to inconvenience the Princess, but why hasn't it been cleaned yet?" At Phulwa's signal, another maid began the cleaning.
The Queen Mother sat on the Princess’s bed waiting for her, but the King arrived before the Princess. Someone had informed him that the Queen Mother had suddenly gone to the Princess’s chamber after speaking with Bhama. Through the servants, the news had spread through the entire palace in the blink of an eye that the Princess had blindfolded herself.
Before the King could ask the Queen anything, the Princess entered through the other door, holding Chanda’s hand. In her white garments with red borders, the Princess looked like a graceful swan, but seeing the blindfold on her eyes, the Queen Mother clutched her heart. The King stepped forward quickly and took the Princess’s hand himself, embracing his daughter, "What happened, my darling! Is there any pain in your eyes? I will call the Royal Physician right now."
The Princess said, "No, Father! Nothing has happened to my eyes, and there is no need for the Royal Physician. Please do not trouble him."
"But daughter, why? Why this sudden blindfold?" The King could not speak further; he simply became overwhelmed with emotion. The entire room grew heavy with the weight of feelings.
Just then, a maidservant came with a message, "Victory to the King and Queen! A message has come from the guest house—the family preceptor, Acharya Saraswatinandan ji, wishes to meet you immediately. He is also keen to meet the Queen and the Princess."
The King looked at the Queen and said, "I had him stay in the guest house after the celebrations yesterday. Come, let us meet him first. Chanda, you bring the Princess after we call for her. (To the Queen) Come, it is not right to keep him waiting longer."
The Queen wiped her tears and nodded in agreement, "Let’s go."
'To be continued...'
