The Test of Excellence: Episode- 5 (Final Part)

'The Refuge of Compassion'

Introduction:

"Greetings, friends! 🙏

Today, we stand at that threshold of 'The Test of Superiority' where logic and ego falter, and only 'Compassion' remains.

In the previous part, we saw how Vishwamitra, in his relentless vow to regain his ascetic powers, abandoned his own infant in the forest. A mother was helpless, and a father had turned stone-hearted due to the defeat of his ego.

In today’s final chapter—'The Refuge of Compassion'—we shall see how Nature spreads its protective embrace when blood relations turn away. Today, that little girl will find not just a savior, but a name that will become immortal in Indian history.

This is not just a story of a Sage and an Apsara; it is a test of humanity and sensitivity. Let us see if 'Compassion' can prove to be greater than 'Penance'?"

The sun had reached the center of the sky, and the sharp rays of noon were illuminating the Tapovan. Sage Kanva was returning with his disciples after gathering dry firewood (Samidhas) for the daily sacrificial fire rituals. A unique glow of benevolence radiated from his serene face. As they approached Sage Vishwamitra’s ashram, a heart-wrenching cry of an infant pierced the natural silence of the forest. It was the soul-stirring plea of a tiny life. Recognizing the direction of the voice, Maharishi Kanva entered the deserted ashram.

The ashram lay vacant from all sides, as if the pulse of life had suddenly vanished. A short distance from the hut, under a dense tree, lay a newborn girl on a bed of grass and leaves, surrounded by birds (Shakunts). Distressed by hunger and thirst, the innocent child was sucking her tiny fingers in a naive yet futile attempt to deceive her own hunger—as if enduring the cruel blow of destiny with her sheer innocence.

When Kanva saw the innocent girl, his ascetic heart was drenched in motherly affection. Through his spiritual power and experience, he understood the situation. The tales of Sage Vishwamitra and Apsara Menaka's infatuation were already floating in the air. Sage Kanva was quick to realize that this child was born of Vishwamitra's radiance and Menaka's womb, abandoned by her parents due to their constraints and ruthlessness. Both had prioritized their own goals, leaving the child cheated by fate and suddenly orphaned. Realizing this, tears welled up in the eyes of the great ascetic.

He stepped forward with utmost tenderness and lifted the little girl in his arms. He stroked her dust-laden forehead with affection and held her close to his chest, as if providing a silent assurance that she was no longer an orphan. The disciples following him were also moved to tears by the sight. They were well aware of the sequence of events, so no curiosity remained. With her purity and innocence, the child bound everyone in a bond of love. It was only natural, for they were simple-hearted seekers living in the compassionate abode of Sage Kanva.

Shortly after, Sage Kanva reached his ashram. He called his wife and other women of the hermitage and told them about the child's condition. Soon, the entire ashram was abuzz. Everyone gathered to see the little life; every heart was filled with pity, concern, and deep compassion.

Sage Kanva spoke in a calm yet firm voice: "This is the child of Rajarshi Vishwamitra and Apsara Menaka. Her mother could not take her to the heavens because the laws of the celestial realm do not permit a human child, nor could she stay here defying King Indra's command. Her father must re-accumulate his lost penance, for in that lies the future welfare of the world. Thus, consider that Providence itself has entrusted us with the responsibility of protecting this innocent child. Nature finds a way to nurture everyone, and we are merely participants in it. Therefore, today, in the presence of the witness of the universe—the Earth, the Sky, and Lord Mahadev—I accept her as my foster daughter."

Maharishi Kanva's voice choked with emotion. He folded his hands in prayer before the sacred fire. Seeing a great sage pray for an abandoned child, the entire ashram was moved and cried out in one voice: "We are all with you, Gurudev! From today, she is our daughter. We shall all nurture her together. Tell us, Gurudev... by what name shall we call her?"

Sage Kanva looked at the face of the child, who had calmed down after being fed, and said: "I found this girl protected by birds (Shakunts), therefore, I name her 'Shakuntala'."

Every atom of the ashram echoed with the same sound— "Shakuntala... Shakuntala... Shakuntala!"

From that day on, not only the residents but even the deities of the forest took responsibility for her. The forest breeze lulled her, and the trees provided shade. The women of the ashram gave her the same maternal love as their own children.

Meanwhile, watching this entire scene from the heavens, Lord Indra looked at the demon king Virochan and smiled: "O Dear! Now tell me, who is superior? The one who holds no ill-will toward the sinner but has such profound love for the forsaken that he is ready to serve like a mother, or the one who abandoned his own daughter for the sake of his wounded ego and lost powers?"

Virochan had no answer to this truth. His logic of 'Superiority of Penance' had lost, and 'Pure Compassion' had triumphed. He accepted his defeat in silence.

'THE END'
